Geographically and historically, Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Chain. With its lush green foliage and many varieties of flowers and fruits bursting from its fertile soil, it is no wonder that Kauai is also known as the "Garden Isle". Nature has had ample time to do its work, sculpting the land into a beauty among beauties, as seen in the dramatically serrated canyons and valleys, the majestic mountains and the pristine beaches.
Throughout the island, popular scenic spots abound. Behold the beautiful jewel tone colors and awesome depth and breadth of Waimea Canyon the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific", the sweeping expanse of majestic tranquility that is Hanalei Valley, the romantic and hauntingly beautiful fern grotto a cavern amid delicate maiden hair and fishtail ferns dripping with water that forms a natural amphitheatre, and just minutes away are equally dramatic views of Opaekaa Falls and the cliffs of Na Pali.
Due to the great diversity of beautiful scenery on such a small island and the lack of manufacturing industry and development, Kauai is an ideal movie set for film makers. Many of the scenic spots proved to be perfect backdrops for such movies as South Pacific, Blue Hawaii with Elvis Presley, King Kong and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
An island of firsts, Kauai was the first of the Hawaiian Islands to be visited by Captain James Cook, the British explorer who "discovered" Hawaii and much of the Pacific. The town of Koloa was the site of the first sugar plantation, founded in 1835.
A land of enchantment, Kauai is full of history and legend. It was once the home of the Menehune Hawaii's legendary race of little people. They were known to be exceptional stonemasons and prodigious builders who mysteriously worked only at night. It is said that if struck by sunlight, they turned to stone. Traces of this mystical race can still be found today, in the island legends and in the works of stone they are said to have left behind.
Come get away from it all...on an island paradise where fantasy becomes reality and you can renew your appreciation and awe of nature's wonders.
